It would be a massive understatement to call the game between Wales and the All Blacks "a friendly". The Welsh are so much more than that! Millenium Stadium provided a magical setting for a spectacular show. We all agreed that this event topped any sporting or concert event that any of us had ever been to. The Welsh pride began long before the game of rugby with loud, spontaneous singing which someone began and everyone joined in. Several coal miners choirs entertained us before the national anthems announced that it was 'game on'. 25,000 kiwis in the record 74,000 crowd demonstrated their mana by accompanying Hayley Westenra in God Defend New Zealand. The Welsh anthem brought both goosebumps and tears as did their challenge to our haka. After the boos died down an enormous Welsh flag was lowered and there was more singing. This time lead by an opera singer. We can debate the logistics of the game for hours. Michelle argues the Welsh were unlucky to not walk away with their first win in 50 years. Scott disagrees and denies that luck has anything to do with it! Apparently, it all comes down to skill. |
